Unlocking Pregnancy Glow: A Complete Guide to Safe Pregnancy Skincare

Pregnant woman applying safe skincare products

Pregnancy is one of the most transformative things a woman experiences. Your body goes through — and grows through — a lot, and it needs special care, so your skincare routine should adapt too.

A good routine will complement and enhance your pregnancy journey by cutting out ingredients that might not suit you or your baby right now. Pregnancy skincare isn't a separate beauty category so much as a form of self-care during this particular chapter — and it comes down to keeping an eye on your ingredient list.

Before You StartThis is general guidance, not medical advice — always run new skincare and any actives past your gynaecologist or a dermatologist first, especially anything you're unsure about.

Understanding Pregnancy Skin Changes

The moment you're expecting, your body begins a complex journey. Surging, fluctuating hormones can bring on "the pregnancy glow" from increased blood flow — or acne, melasma and stretch marks, which pose their own challenge. Alongside the hormonal shifts, a handful of common ingredients simply aren't considered safe to use (or consume) during pregnancy.

Safe & Effective Cleansing

Clear skin, whatever your skin type or tone, exudes confidence — and the most basic, important part of getting there is gentle cleansing. Skin has its own pH, and protecting it matters more than ever right now: harsh cleansers cause dryness, irritation, acne and premature ageing, pregnant or not.

  • Avoid face washes with sulphates, alcohol or strong fragrances.
  • Oily or combination skin: look for a gentle gel cleanser — Simple, Bioderma or Cetaphil are safe, easy picks.
  • Dry or normal skin: go for a cream-based gentle cleanser like CeraVe, Cetaphil or Dermalogica, which cleans while keeping moisture in.
Ingredients to avoid in cleansersRetinoids, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, phthalates, formaldehyde, Tazorac/Accutane, oxybenzone, certain essential oils, aluminium chloride, parabens, tetracycline, dihydroxyacetone, thioglycolic acid and toluene.

Hydration for a Radiant Glow

Hydration is the cornerstone of healthy, radiant skin — it prevents dryness, supports elasticity, and helps prevent stretch marks, which are extremely common in pregnancy.

One honest thing I want to flag: no cream, serum or oil can remove stretch marks once they've formed — you can only help prevent them with consistent care. Please don't spend hard-earned money on products that promise to erase them; that claim doesn't hold up.

For moisture, dry skin does well with cream-based moisturisers, while oily or combination skin usually prefers a gel-based one.

Look forAloe vera, shea butter, coconut oil, cocoa butter, antioxidants (vitamin A and C), hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and peptides.
AvoidRetinol, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, parabens, aluminium chloride, azelaic acid, glycolic acid, topical salicylic acid, topical benzoyl peroxide and essential oils.

Sun Protection to Prevent Skin Damage

That pregnancy glow can feel like you're basking in permanent sunshine — but hormonal changes actually make skin more reactive to UV exposure, not less. Hyperpigmentation and premature ageing are the two concerns pregnant women run into most from sun exposure, so sunscreen matters more here, not less.

What to look for in a pregnancy-safe sunscreen:

  • Broad-spectrum SPF — protection against both UVA (premature ageing) and UVB (sunburn) rays.
  • Pregnancy-safe actives — mineral filters like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, rather than oxybenzone or retinyl palmitate.
  • Hypoallergenic & fragrance-free — skin runs more sensitive right now, so this cuts down irritation risk.
Ingredients to avoidAvobenzone, benzophenone, oxybenzone, octinoxate, PABA, homosalate, octocrylene, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor, hydroquinone, isotretinoin, retinol and other retinoids, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide.

My personal recommendation here is Minimalist's Multi-Vitamin SPF 50 — it ticks every box above.

Your beauty journey during pregnancy is your own, and every part of it is a chapter in the story of motherhood. Keep the rituals that make you feel good — the soothing masks, the quiet moments of self-care — seek professional guidance when you need it, and trust your skin's resilience. You're not just nurturing your complexion right now; you're nurturing life itself.
