Pregnancy Skincare: pregnancy is the most transformative and beautiful thing, a woman experiences in her life. A woman goes through a lot of changes during this time. Your body goes and grows through a lot and needs special requirements, so should your skincare routine.
A good skincare routine will complement and enhance your pregnancy journey by eliminating ingredients that might not suit you and your baby during this time. Pregnancy skincare is not just a beauty routine but a form of self-care during this journey.
And remember there’s no pregnancy skincare in particular but there are certain ingredients that one should avoid or add during pregnancy. Hence keep an eye on the ingredient list. Let us delve into the secrets of skincare while addressing the challenges our pregnancy can bring to our skin.
The moment you discover that you are expecting, your body begins a complex journey. The surging and fluctuating levels of hormones can cause both ‘the pregnancy glow’ from increased blood flow or acne, melasma and stretch marks, which can pose a challenge.
Not just hormonal changes but there are a few ingredients too that are not safe to apply or consume during pregnancy. Let’s just read what kind of skincare and products we can use for a particular step-
A clean and clear skin is beyond everything. No matter what your skin type or, skin colour is, all you actually need and want is clear skin. It exudes confidence and radiance.
The most basic and important part of skincare is gentle cleansing. Our skin has a specific pH of its own and we should always try to maintain the same which keeps our skin moisturized and hydrated.
The harsh cleansers cause dryness, irritation, acne and premature ageing. Not just during pregnancy, these points apply during no pregnancy as well.
Avoid facewashes with sulphates, alcohol or strong fragrances.
Try to look for a gentle gel-type cleanser like simple facewash, bio derma facewash or Cetaphil if you have an oily/combination skin type.
Go for cream-based gentle cleansers like Cerave, Cetaphil, or Dermalogica facewash. these cleansers provide moisture while cleaning your skin properly.
Ingredients to avoid in the cleansers are Retinoids, Benzoyl peroxide, Salicylic acid, Hydroquinone, Phthalates, Formaldehyde, Tazorac and Accutane, Oxybenzone, Some essential oils, Aluminium chloride, Parabens, Tetracycline, Dihydroxyacetone, Thioglycolic acid and Toluene.
Hydration is the key and cornerstone of healthy and radiant skin. It not only prevents dryness and maintain youthfulness but also helps in preventing stretch marks which is very common during pregnancy.
Ladies, one most important thing that I would like to share is that no cream/serum/oil or basically anything can help you get rid of stretch marks.
You can only prevent them by applying suitable products but cannot get rid of them. Hence stop wasting your hard earned money on the products that claim to do so.
Coming to hydration part, there are a lot of good products in the market that will keep your skin moisturised and supple. Dry skin beauties should go for cream based moisturizers while the oily/combination skin beauties can go for gel based moisturizers. There are few ingredients that one should look out for in the moisturizers.
Ingredients that should be added to your hydration regime in the form of serums or moisturizers are aloe vera, shea butter, coconut oil, cocoa butter, antioxidants (vitamin A and C), hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and peptides.
Ingredients to avoid are Retinol, Benzoyl peroxide, Salicylic acid, Hydroquinone, Parabens, Aluminum chloride, azelaic acid, glycolic acid, topical salicylic acid, topical benzoyl peroxide and Essential oils.
When it comes to maintaining a healthy and radiant complexion during pregnancy, few practices are as crucial as diligent sun protection. While that pregnancy glow can make you feel like you’re basking in perpetual sunlight, the reality is that your skin is more susceptible to damage from harmful UV rays than ever before.
Pregnancy is often associated with heightened skin sensitivity and susceptibility to various skin issues. This increased vulnerability can be attributed to hormonal changes, which make your skin more reactive to environmental factors, particularly the sun.
The two primary skin concerns that pregnant women frequently encounter due to sun exposure are hyperpigmentation and premature aging.
Sunscreen is your frontline defense against the sun’s harmful UV rays. But during pregnancy, it’s not just any sunscreen that will do. You need a sunscreen that offers reliable protection while being gentle on your skin and safe for your growing baby. Look for the following features in pregnancy-safe sunscreens:
1. Broad-Spectrum SPF: Ensure that the sunscreen provides broad-spectrum protection, meaning it guards against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays contribute to premature aging, while UVB rays are responsible for sunburn.
2. Pregnancy-Safe Ingredients: Choose sunscreens formulated with ingredients that are considered safe during pregnancy. Avoid oxybenzone, retinyl palmitate, and other potentially harmful chemicals. Instead, opt for mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as the active ingredients.
3. Hypoallergenic and Fragrance-Free: Pregnancy can make your skin more sensitive, so opt for hypoallergenic and fragrance-free sunscreens to minimize the risk of irritation.
Ingredients to avoid are Avobenzone, Benzophenone, Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Paba, Homosalate, Octocrylene, 4-Methylbenzylidene Camphor, Hydroquinone, Isotretinoin, Retinol and other retinoids, Salicylic acid, Benzoyl peroxide.
I would personally recommend you to go for the minimalist sunscreen.
Your beauty journey during pregnancy is unique, and every experience is a chapter in the beautiful story of motherhood. It’s an expression of self-love, confidence, and care, all of which radiate from within.
So, continue to embrace the beauty rituals that make you feel your best. Relish the moments of self-pampering, the soothing masks, and the moments of serenity in your skincare routine. Seek professional guidance when needed, and above all, trust in the resilience and adaptability of your skin.
As you nurture your beauty, remember that you are nurturing life itself. Your radiant complexion reflects the inner strength and beauty that define this extraordinary phase. Embrace and cherish the remarkable journey of pregnancy—the journey of a lifetime.
