Hello ladies and gentlemen! Here's the review for my forever-favourite compact. I'll own, use and love plenty of foundations and concealers over time, and something new always comes along — but if there's one product that's stayed a constant, it's my MAC compact.
MAC Studio Fix Powder is one of the brand's genuine bestsellers, and it's held that position for years. When I was on my honeymoon, a friend asked how I get ready so fast every time — the answer is this compact, mascara, a brow pencil and lipstick. That's it. It's been my go-to for a presentable look ever since, and I still enjoy how simple it is.

Packaging
Classic MAC black packaging, with the shade printed on the outer cardboard box — sturdy, as you'd expect from the brand. Inside the round case: a mirror on top, the powder in the middle, and a flat sponge applicator in the last compartment, held in a net-like layer that keeps it from spoiling with trapped moisture.
My Experience
There are two kinds of makeup artists — the ones who love going bold and loud, and the ones barely seen wearing any makeup at all. I'm firmly the second type.
I used to be a tinted-moisturiser person (honestly, I still lean that way, but oily skin keeps pulling me back to compact) before I found this one. I was sceptical going in, mostly over shade matching. MAC counters kept pointing me to NC42 — which they seem to hand every Indian-skin-toned customer by default — but it read too orange on me in the compact, so I never followed through for years.
Then I got engaged and started building my bridal trousseau. At a Nykaa store with a MAC counter, the artist there actually helped me properly, and suggested NC41 instead. That was it — finally, my true shade, and skin that looked better without looking like anything was "on" it.
I genuinely love this compact. If your skin's in decent shape, you don't need foundation underneath at all — this alone smooths, evens tone and controls oil, with light-to-medium buildable coverage. I can't personally vouch for the 12-hour claim (who's wearing one look for 12 hours straight anyway?), but I do use it on clients as a setting powder too, and it holds up. Applied properly, it doesn't settle into fine lines, and it's flash-photography friendly.
How to Use It
- For sheer coverage: apply with a fluffy brush in circular motions — I use MAC's dual-ended brush and it works beautifully.
- For buildable coverage: use the sponge in a dabbing motion, the same way you'd use a beauty blender with liquid foundation. Set with a mist or setting spray afterward to avoid any cakey look.
